All of NATO, including France, has maintained an influential presence within the Middle East.

One of the many goals of the Islamic State of Iraq and Syria is to rid the Middle East of foreign influence. The French military still maintain a presence in Iraq and Afghanistan, and assist other NATO forces in maintaining control of those unstable regions.

If ISIS were to scare the French (and NATO) into abandoning their positions, ISIS could easily retake Iraq and the surrounding areas.

ISIS believes that if they continue to attack the homeland of these influential powers, that France and NATO will surrender their positions, leaving the area free-for-the-taking, once again.
