No, there is no debtor's prison in the US. If a collection agency has called you and has made this threat, contact an attorney and consider filing charges against them in federal court for violations of the Fair Debt Collections Practices Act. Be open to settling out of court, but do it for nothing less than ten times the balance they were attempting to collect.
If it was a repossession agency that was contacting you and you are hindering the lender in recovery of their collateral, then you could be arrested in some states. This would not be for the debt but for the crime of hiding the vehicle (hindering) or refusal to surrender it (theft or contempt of court).
Not all companies collect outside of the US, but when they do collect, collectors dont have any issue calling international
if you pay the collection agency you can get back in good credit standings , ifyou dont they can get a judgment against you, and garnish your wadges , if they do a charge off it stays on your credit for up to 10 years know and it is harder to get credit with a charge off
Absolutely not!!!! A collection agency has no kind of authority to touch anyone's social security disability benefits. Or anything else. Scare tactics, empty threats are all a debt collection can do. If u dont want to pay a bill, thats the consumer's choice, not those fools!!
Contact the State Division of Banking in the state the company is located in.
A collection agency is not hired to get the amount paid in payments they are paid to get the amount in full. At this point the place you originally owed the money to and did not pay may or may not be willing to take payments being that they have now hired the collection agency to get the money from you. YOu can call the original creditor and tell them you are willing to pay and if they say no then you must pay the collection agency, I have never heard of any of them taking payments. When they get hired they try to collect as much as possible of the owed amount so they can get a higher commission. They dont want payments they want money in full....
They usually give you 30 days to respond to the debt and make payment arrangements. If you dont respond they usually report it.
they will send it to crediotrs and then a collection agency will call you.. your creidt score will go down
Dont ignore it! Try to reach a settlement. At the very least, go to court. If you dont go, then the account will automatically become a judgement, which will stay on your credit report for up to 10 years. Most companies are willing to work with a payment plan, so there are certainly options available to resolve the debt before it becomes a larger and lengthy problem.
No,NO. In the USA you cant get arrested for owing a bill. Debt is considered a civil matter and not a criminial matter. If you use fraud (phony name etc) to attain those medical services then yes you could be arrested for fraud however that is entirely different than simple not paying a bill. Child support is the only civil debt I know of whereby if you dont pay you can be arrested.
The best way is to pay on results. Dont agree to any contract, just agree to test them. Feed them a few small accounts and ONLY PAY AFTER YOU GET PAID. That way you'll get an idea of how they perfrom before you give them more business. I"ve used a collection agency at Headsets.com for about ten years and we dont have a contract. They just do a good job, and we pay them.
my credit car d wsa sold to another agency for collections the collection agency gave me your phone and said you have my account orginal crdiror legacy card card 4239801024374221 if you dont have it who does phone no please and co name thank you
The most important thing here is get the collection agency to provide proof, in writing, that the debt will be 'paid in full' upon you making the payment, before you send them any money. Never ever give the collector a credit card number or check number over the phone. Never eversend a personal check either. Always use a certified check or money order to pay them. They have been known to clear out bank accounts and max out credit cards with this information.
