If you mean how long you have between being interested in being a cop and when you'll actually get hired - to get in shape, learn a bit, etc. - the answer is probably 4 months to a year.

Once hired and in the academy, you'll have another 4 to 6 months until you graduate at which point you'll be in a Field Training Officer program for another few months.

There is usually no length of time. Most officers stay officers until they retire. However, they can generally leave when they want to. There is occasionally a contracted time, like when a department pays for the officer's full training and certification. In those cases, they sometimes have to work a set amount of time, like two years, to compensate for the money spent on that training.
