One measure of an investment is liquidity: How easily can it be converted to cash? Silver Eagles, with their unique U.S. Government backing, can be sold for cash at most coin and precious metals dealers worldwide. They're also legal tender. Their one-dollar face value is largely symbolic, because silver's market price - which is reported in the market pages and Web sites of major newspapers - has historically been higher.
Yes, the 2009 American Silver Eagle is legal tender in the United States with a face value of $1. However, its intrinsic value as a 1-ounce silver bullion coin far exceeds its nominal value.

I have been unable to obtain an answer from the Mint or the US Treasury. Its Crazy they don't have a way to contact them by e-mail to ask such questions. I have to assume that eventho the 2009 overstrike was struck on a genuine (Legal Tender) US Mint issued eagle, the removal of the original mint mark and replacing it with a dc mint mark (as well as the proofing) probably negates this coin as a legal tender coin. Since this is the same as defacing US Currency, I'd be interested to know how the treasury department views this coin. If anyone finds out, I'd like to know. It does server a useful purpose of filling the 2009 hole in the Proof Eagle set....Thanks...Bill
what is the value of a 2009 silver eagle dolar

However, dollar coins which contain silver are valued at many times their face value and using them for legal tender, while possible, is not wise. Polk and Zachary Taylor.

Modern "silver eagle" coins are 99.9% silver, which is about as close as you can get to pure silver using normal refining techniques. Old silver $1 coins (1935 and earlier) are sometimes confused with modern eagles, but they're not the same. They were made of 90% silver to stand up to circulation wear, and contain about 24 gm of pure silver with the remainder being copper.
