It depends on the situation. In a court setting, in which you are under oath, it is 100% illegal to lie about being a lawyer, or ever being a lawyer. But, almost under any other situation you can say you are a lawyer, famous, the president, married, not married, or whatever you can dream up.

Its also a good rule of thumb not to lie to the police. Though, it may not be directly illegal to call yourself something... it may arouse suspicion.
