There are multiple ways of stopping crimes, and here are some of them:

Make use of CCTV cameras on suspicious locations and make streetlights lighter in dark areas.

Advertise crime as bad to the younger generation using McGruff the crime dog- they are the future.

Keep valuables out of prying eyes and in a safe place.

Join together as a community and look out for each other using neighbourhood watch schemes.

Build a "relationship" with the local police force to use them in extreme circumstances.

Also, if there were frequent crimes taking place in alleyway for example, that alley way could simply be blocked off. In addition to that, there are people known as architect liason officers, who redesign the streets so that crimes are less frequent. For example, in Northumbria, the police recruited liason officers and they decided to put up defensive boundaries around the houses. This basically informed the people that committed the crimes that it was private. I mean, before they had this boundaries, there were just massive gaps between the houses and people could just walk into their gardens easily and burgle the houses.
