Tailgating is extremely dangerous. When drivers have to stop abruptly, tailgaters are often left with little or no time to brake. Tailgating is especially dangerous in high traffic conditions when the driver in front is keeping up with the speed in that lane and cannot pull over to the left lane. The tailgater become more unreasonable, more frustrated and operates their vehicle more dangerously as time passes. The driver in front becomes more and more stressed by the car following too closely. Tailgating can lead to incidents of road rage. Tailgating is one of the most common causes of highway accidents.

Tailgating on the highway can lead to increased risk of accidents, reduced reaction time, and potential road rage incidents. It can also create a domino effect where sudden braking by the lead vehicle can cause a chain reaction of collisions behind.
