At English common law a felony was an offense for which conviction resulted in a total forfeiture of lands, goods, or both. The Criminal Law Act 1967 abolished the distinction between felony and misdemeanor in England and that Act has been further amended.

In the United States a felony is a serious crime usually punishable by imprisonment for more than a year right up to the death penalty in jurisdictions where capital punishment is allowed. Examples are rape, murder, arson, tax evasion, kidnapping, vehicular homicide, child pornography, aggravated assault, and burglary.
