This act was passed in 1862. This is during the civil war era. It basically meant anyone could get a free piece of federal land so they could start a farm or a mine or just build a house. The land was usually out west, because back then, that's where all the empty land was.

Things that are not elements of the homestead act include anything happening after 1862, the idea of preservation as it applies to a land ethic, and municipal building codes.
