Work in the fields for slaves was extremely grueling, involving long hours under harsh conditions. Slaves were forced to toil in the fields planting and harvesting crops such as cotton, tobacco, rice, and sugar cane. They were subjected to brutal treatment, inadequate food and shelter, and had little to no control over their own lives.
Slaves used different tools in the fields depending on what type work they were doing. In fields of cotton, some were given hoes but they mostly worked with their hands to pick the cotton and put them in sacks.

Slaves were seen as a source of cheap and easily controlled labor, and were used as a means to maximize profits and maintain economic success in agricultural enterprises. Ownership of slaves also provided social status and power within society for landowners.
Slaves were often required to finish work before dark as it was difficult to work in the fields at night without proper lighting. Additionally, completing work before sunset ensured that the slaves had enough time to rest and prepare for the next day of labor.
Most of the African Americans slaves worked in the cotton fields where they picked cotton on the plantations. There was always an overseer that watched over the slaves to see if they were working hard enough. If an overseer saw a slave not work, they beat them. There were house slaves, too.
