Sojourner Truth was born into slavery around 1797 in Swartekill, New York.
In 1657 Virginia passed a fugitive slave law.
The United States banned the transatlantic slave trade in 1808, although illegal smuggling of slaves continued. The British Empire abolished the slave trade in 1807, and slavery itself was outlawed throughout the British Empire in 1833.
The United States Congress could not touch the slave trade until 1808, as stated in the U.S. Constitution's Slave Trade Clause. This clause prohibited Congress from banning the importation of slaves until that year.
The Fugitive Slave Act was passed in 1850 as part of the Compromise of 1850. This federal law required the return of escaped slaves to their owners, even if they were in a free state.
Slave codes ended with the abolition of slavery in 1865. Slave Codes were enacted to give slaveholders domination over their slaves. However, disgruntled southern states retaliated over the freeing of slaves by enacting "Black Codes" between 1865 and 1866 which took away any rights gained by the freedmen and enacted a de facto slave institution.

In 1826 a slave [Isabella] sued for her freedom: it was granted in 1828, ending slavery. She began a search for the truth concerning her son who had been sold off when he was 2 years of age. Because of this journey she became known as Sojourner Truth. One of several stories concerning the end of slavery in New York.

sojourner truth is famouse for giving a speech and winning two Scott lawsuits she also freed black people:) when she had children her five year old son was sold:( but when she won the second lawsuit she go her son back

Maine became a state as a result of the Missouri compromise in 1820. Maine became a free, non-slave state, with Missouri becoming a slave state the next year.

Sojourner Truth did not win any particular award during her lifetime. She was a prominent African American abolitionist and women's rights activist known for her powerful speeches and advocacy for social justice.
