Ignorance of the law is not an excuse because the legal system operates under the principle that individuals are expected to know and abide by the laws that govern them. Ancient Athenian citizens made decisions directly in the assembly This is in contrast to representatives democracy which is?

Representative democracy involves citizens electing officials to make decisions on their behalf, while direct democracy, as practiced in Ancient Athens, involved citizens gathering to make decisions collectively.
