First a correction
The phrase or term "Dumb" is into days language more of a detrimental term meaning stupid. It is more acceptable to use the term Deaf without speech. Because that is what frequently occurs. Many deaf people have a voice but because they have not heard speech from birth they have difficulty forming the sounds as a hearing child would.
To learn sign you have a number of options.
1. Buy a book which takes you through the alphabet and a vast array of sign
Draw back with this is that hearing people will not always have a person to practice with and therefore have difficulty picking up the ability to "read sign"
But is can work
2. do as above and have someone who is deaf or is capable of sign to mentor you. This does work really well and if the mentor is deaf you will soon bond. The skills increase quickly as your having to use them more in a relaxed situation plus as a hearing person you may actually be able to provide assistance if they need someone who can interpret to some small degree.
3. Join a class environment which teaches sign as a "language". Some county's have adult learning options in local schools etc that provide lessons at varying degrees.
4. Use all of these options. Also consider contacting Deaf organisations in your country. They will frequently have information about learning paths, where these take place and the cost if any in learning. they will frequently have books and other media with signs in that will help and support.
The deaf will always appreciate someone taking time to learn and understand how to communicate. It does not matter if your not that good initially as this community will always try to assist.
People use sign language to communicate with those who are profoundly deaf. Some people are both deaf, blind and dumb (cannot speak). The use their hands to feel sign language and "speak" using their hands. If you are deaf it is the way to communicate with people.A LOT of people use sign language! We use it to communicate with the deaf and sometimes animals, like monkeys.
Records exist of a sign language existing within deaf communities in Britain as far back as 1570. British sign language has evolved and improved , as all languages do, from these origins by modification, invention and demand Thomas Braidwood a teacher from Edinburgh founded 'Braidwood's Academy for the Deaf and Dumb' in 1760 which is recognised as the first school for the deaf in Britain.
First of all, please never say this term, "deaf and dumb". It is quite insulting, and considered today to be very inappropriate as well as incorrect. In eaarly times, deaf persons were thought to be dumb if they could not speak. Today, we realize that they are not dumb; they might be quite smart. The deaf often do not speak because they do not hear the sounds made by speaking. Having said that, the deaf communicate mostly in 2 ways; signed language (with the hands, gestures, and expressions), and by teletype (a machine similar to a keyboard here).
British Sign Language (BSL) has evolved over centuries, with contributions from deaf individuals, sign language teachers, and researchers. While there isn't a single creator, BSL as we know it today has been shaped by these collective efforts to establish a standardized form of sign language in the UK.
There are records of some sign language used in the UK as far back as 1570. However,Thomas Braidwood, an Scottish teacher, founded 'Braidwood's Academy for the Deaf and Dumb' (the term dumb is now not used as its considered to be insulting, the tern without speack is used as that is actually the situation)in 1760 which is recognised as the first school for the deaf in Britain. The use of the language were very much hidden away as more and more deaf people passed the signs on to others to expand the communication it was until post 2000 that BSL actually became recognised as an official language in the same holding as Englaish. However, many organisations sadly still do not realise that this communication mode is a real a language
deaf and dumb people or even chimpanzees can learn and talk in sign language to us. In the silent world, they communicated with sign language.
Deaf and Dumb/Speechless people communicate by normal sign language, as they can still see. If you mean deaf and blind, they communicate by having someone tap out the sign language on their hand and then replying with normal sign language. The learning process is arduous.
To be able to communicate with the deaf and dumb (unable to speak - it's a supid name) community.
IMPROVED: The post below is correct, but I MUST add that it has long been considered VERY INAPPROPRIATE to say deaf and dumb. Deaf is to not hear. Mute is to not speak. Deaf and dumb is considered extremely offensive. Also know that many deaf persons speak with their mouths just as hearing persons do.Sign language is the most common form of communication used. Basically, it is an additional language people learn so they can talk together in another way. Lip reading is also used, but it is better as an augmentation, rather than as a primary means of communication.
Whatever language they use in the country they are from.Either through speech or sign language. In America, they mostly use sign languageIn America, deaf people use American Sign Language to communicate but there are several other sign languages that are used around the worldAnd you don't want to say deaf and dumb. Just say deaf because there is actually no correlation between being deaf and being dumb. There are some dumb deaf people just like there are some dumb hearing people. The term "deaf and dumb" started when people believed that deaf people were incapable of higher thought because they could not understand or express themselves. But then in this case i guess the word dumb was meant to mean "mute" as in unable to speak and not "stupid"Anyway, just say deaf because some deaf people do make sounds when they sign and some can even speak but not as clearly as a hearing person would.Sign language, there are several versions, depending on where you live in the world.
Helen Keller was deaf and blind but not dumb. While she did lose her ability to see and hear at a young age, Keller was able to learn to communicate effectively through tactile sign language and eventually became a prominent author and political activist.

They're not. This is a classical stereotype which is not true at all. Also, referring to mute people as "dumb" is discrimination. You risk being sued and/or jailed for discrimination. Learn some respect.
severe cases of dyslexia can lead to that. or if youre deaf and dumb. severe cases of dyslexia can lead to that. or if youre deaf and dumb. The condition is called dysgraphia, and it causes people to reverse or missspell words. "deaf and dumb" is an insulting term. Do you mean "deaf mute" or " speech/hearing challenged"? Youre is actually "you're" and "missspell" is misspell.
