In reality, you can't become a zombie.

However, in literature, there are many ways to become a zombie. Often it is a virus or disease, or the dead that have come back to life by dark magic or another strange occurrence. Being bitten or even scratched by a zombie is often stated as a way to become one, although that is usually in cases where it is a disease and not a voodoo curse or other magic.

They often wander around with limited mental function, causing havoc without understanding how, and moving slowly. Depending on the specific author's version of Zombies, they eat human flesh, hearts, bone, brain and other essential organs in the hope that they will come fully back to life, even though they forget their past life. Primarily brains though... that is one of the things that seems to be consistent across most of the stories. Some zombie versions are also very smart and/or very fast.
