Actually, it is NOT pronounced the way it looks. In Italy, it is pronounced Jo-vahn or sometimes Jo-van-ee, but the long "e" is rare and more American. Just like capicola is NOT pronounced the way it looks, but rather pronounced gah-pa-gool, or ricotta is pronounced rih-got.
