There are several first languages spoken in the UK, depending on the region.
English is by far the most common spoken language with over 95% of the population speaking fluently.
Other historic regional languages exist however. Welsh is spoken by about 600,000 people, roughly 20% of the Welsh population. There are 60,000 fluent Scottish Gaelic speakers - 1% of all Scottish people, this is mostly confined to the north west Highlands, particularly the outer hebrides, although sizable numbers of speakers exist in Inverness. 1.5 million people in Scotland speak 'Scots' (30% of the total population), this is mostly spoken in the lowlands and Scottish cities of Edinburgh, Glasgow and Aberdeen.
In Northern Ireland roughly 7% (110,000 people) speak Irish Gaelic, while a further 2% speak Ulster Scots - a variation of Scots.
There are also small pockets of speakers of Cornish in Cornwall and Manx in the Isle of Mann. The channel islands also have their own languages respectively.
