A strong yes to both. English is a creolized language. This means that from the beginning English has been very good at making use of many different languages for things like vocabulary and grammar. It is very easy for English to incorporate words from different languages and roots and turning them into new English words. It gives English a great deal of flexibility and an unusual ability to grow and change that other languages don't have, or at least not to the same degree.
