It may eventually lead to hatred, violence etc.
For example: In India, after Independence, during the making of the Constitution, the Congress had been adamant that no language(English) could supersede Hindi as the national language. But soon they had to change their opinion when the southern states of India warned them that if Hindi would be imposed on them, then they would separate from India. So to prevent blatant occurrence of a carnage and to maintain unity in diversity the government could not entirely end the use of English in India.( This is an example of a linguistic majority. If it had been linguistic minority then apparently English (in this case) would have been easily imposed on the southern states.)
