If you local bank will not exchange them, you must take the coins to a Federal Reserve Bank. If your coins are broken or otherwise not whole, the only place you can redeem them is at the United States Mint in Philadelphia.

Is it common for an 1889 Morgan dollar to the reverse side upside down?

Yes, it is. Canadian coins are struck as what's called "Medal Turned" meaning both sides of the coins are right side up turning the coin left to right. Our US coins are "Coin Turned" and are opposite. One side is upside down.

How do coin collection companies figure gold plated coins are worth 79.00 or 95.00?

Any reputable coin dealer will tell you that gold plated coins are worthless to a collector and they are damaged. However, often gold plated coins are sold (often deceptively) to buyers via TV or internet marketing. There are only a handful of gold plated coins created by legitimate government mints that are collectible (this is the same for "colorized" coins) but the US mint has not made any of them. A gold plated US coin is damaged and generally only worth face value (or silver scrap value in the case of older coins).

Does the Royal Australian Mint recycle Australian coins?

Coins returned to the Royal Australian Mint (RAM) because they are worn, damaged or mutilated, or coins that were minted surplus to requirements, are melted down and recycled into new coins if possible or applicable. The RAM does not deal directly with the public. Worn, damaged or mutilated coins should be deposited with a bank. The Bank will then make the necessary arrangements to get the coins back to the mint and out of circulation. Coins that are so badly mutilated or damaged that they cannot be identified will not be accepted.

No, retailers are allowed to accept whatever in payment for goods, be that US coins, Chinese Coins, gold and silver coins, or toothbrushes. A retailer can refuse to honor some or all US coins. However, since US coins are legal tender, a company cannot sue you for not paying a bill previously agreed upon in US dollars for paying in US coins.
