How many times have you had to sit on your suitcase to get it to close? Do you overpack, taking more than you needed? There is a system to packing up your luggage, and here are a few tips on how to help you pack.

First, make a list. Think of how long you will be gone, what the weather is usually like, and write down everything you think you want to bring with you. Items such as jewelry, money, keys, medicines, and documents should not go into your luggage. They should be carried with you. Do you know if there are laundry facilities where you will be staying? Take that into consideration. If you are staying at a hotel, shampoos, conditioners, lotions, hair dryers, and irons are all provided. If you do bring any, they should be in small containers and put in plastic bags.

Lay out all of the clothes you think you want to take. Look at them carefully and think. You will see items there that you don’t really need. You may love a certain dress, but is it something you really think you will be wearing? You may surprise yourself and put back more than you thought you would. Try packing basic solid colors that can be worn with more than one piece of clothing. For example, a nice looking solid blouse/shirt can be worn with jeans, pants, skirt, jumper, shorts, etc. Try and pack clothing you can use for more than one outfit. Sweaters are bulky; light jackets are easier to pack.

Rolling your clothes is a popular method of packing. Rolling several t-shirts together can reduce wrinkling and space. Button- up shirts should be folded into a square smoothing out any wrinkles. Socks should be packed inside shoes. You definitely need to pack one comfortable pair of shoes, one pair of sandals (if needed), and a dressier pair (if needed). Just make sure your shoes go with your outfits. Packing lightly allows room for you to bring back new clothes or items you have bought along the way.

If you wait until the last minute to pack, you will overpack. Take your time and pack sensibly.
