They must be. I live in Maine and saw two on May 18 of this year, (2020). I have plenty of foxes around where I live and have seen many over my 60 years, but never a black one, and neither has anyone else I know. I saw them near dusk crossing a road ahead of me. There were two adults, (a black one and a red one), and a black kit. When I drove up near them, the kit veered off to the side. The adults stopped to look for it. I got a good look at all three. The black ones had white at the tip of their tails, otherwise, they looked entirely black, no gray or other markings on them. At first I was confused at what I was looking at, but by the time it sank in, it was too late to grab my phone for a picture. I keep going back to the area hoping to see them again, but I think that was my once-in-a-lifetime experience.
