No, they don't. Supposedly the Mountain beaver can, but documentation did not accompany the report. Mountain beavers generally stay close to home.

Yes, they do occasionally climb trees. I saw a beaver climb a little ways up a sycamore tree near my house. It swam across a small creek, ran up the embankment (I had a great view of its broad, flat tail), and scrambled a few feet up the big tree trunk like a cat would. I had my dog with me, and I think the beaver saw my dog and freaked out.

There is a small wooded area behind my home with a creek near by, I observed a beaver climb 6ft. up a tree then back down. it was identified by its chubby body and dark, wide, flat tail.
