Yes, this is very possible with certain types of collars. If this concerns you, you can purchase either a break-away collar that will come unbuckled immediately if it becomes snagged on something, or a collar with an expandable elastic backing that will allow the cat to slip out if anything like that happens.
If it is a slip away collar, the cat might of had it caught on a branch or something similar and yanked hard enough so the collar brakes free. If the collar has a latch that is not slip away the cat could have slipped out of the collar if it was not tight enough. (Both incidents have happened to me)
