Do koalas live in the outback?

No. Koalas are indigenous to Australia and live in tropical to temperate eucalypt forest and woodlands and can be found along the eastern and south-eastern coastal regions. They live in eucalyptus trees and are mostly nocturnal and eat certain types of eucalypt leaves exclusively.

If you're thinking of deserts, savannah or scrubby plains, then no.

Koalas are obligatory (must eat from) to certain types of eucalypts, and these are all quite tall trees.

Koala habitat is medium to tall open woodland/forest, which you may not think of as "outback", and which is not found deep inland here in Australia.

Generally, no. There are few places in the outback which have dense enough bushland which supports the varieties of eucalyptus on which koalas feed. Koalas are certainly found in some outback areas of Queensland and New South Wales, but generally they are found where the bushland is denser, within a few hundred kilometres of the coast.
