If it was me I would keep my animals inside and the trash inside the garage, with no dinner possibilities he wont stick around. When food becomes more available higher up in the mountains he will be there as it was probably hunger that drove him into the rural area in the first place.
They don't want to be where you are, it is the people who have moved into his back yard so don't be too harsh, I have at least 6 large bobcats wandering around in the Golf course here and it is only in the winter, they have only bothered to eat some cats that were either feral or left outside on their own at night, they will walk around within feet of where I am but make no effort to come any closer this goes for the coyotes as well.
