Scottish Terriers don't have FUR they have HAIR so their shedding is MINIMAL similar to the same amount a human would "shed" HOWEVER they need CONSTANT GROOMING either by yourself or a professional and this can get expensive QUICK!

In the show ring Scotties need to be "hand stripped" that means that their back hair is brought short by "pulling" or "stripping" the loose dead hair by hand or with a "stipping knife" this takes a LOT of practice to do right and you should look for a mentor (contact your local breed group, you can find them through the AKC web site or just Google)........A pet scottie can be clippered but even with that it is recommended that you "strip" their coat at least once a year to help thin it out and cut down on "itching"

Is it bad if yorkies shed a lot?

Yorkshire Terriers should not shed fur (as far as I'm concerned, because my families Yorkie doesn't shed fur). So it could be a bit bad, especially if it is winter as it could get cold. I would recommend taking it to the vets so they can tell you what is wrong with your dog.
