Staw bedding should be deep enough to protect your horses hocks when he lies down.A thin bed is also wetter and not so nice to lie on. I read in a stable managment book you should be able to sit on the bed yourself ,read a book and feel comfortable and dry. You shouldn't be able to see the floor through it your horse could get sores and capped hocks from banging his legs on the hard floor. But if you have rubber matting as a base you can use just a small covering of straw.
