How did Great Danes get their breed name?

Danes were originally used as raiders in Egypt. Brought out by one trainer he would routinely have a pack of 10-25 dogs and would use them to heard and exhaust travelers roaming across the desert.

Later on they were shipped across Europe for an assortment of tasks all of which pertained to herding or security.

Great Danes are their own sub set of Dog.

Genetics relate to both mastiffs and wolf hounds, But they are their own sub species!

They are not a cross or an off breed, they are a sub breed! Uninterrupted genetics for 1000 years while isolated in Egypt dictated that....

"Great Dane" is the English translation of this breeds French name - grand Danois - which means "big Danish". No one knows where the "dane" part came from cuz great Dane's are not danish.

Dont know why they are called Great Danes, but they originated from Germany and were used as hunting dogs for wild boar. If you ever have the misfortune to see a Dane fight it will flip its opponent onto its back and grab the throat applying pressure either to kill or make the animal submit. My Dane does it to my Jack Russel - playing - but I can see that the result is total submission. He has also done this to a Rottweiler of 16stone, who attacked my Dane, and had the same affect.

They were originally (and more correctly) called German Mastiffs, but during the 1800s a French writer encountered them in Denmark and called them Great Danes. Even though they a originated in Germany and have nothing to do with Denmark, the name somehow stuck.
