How do horses greet one another?

First they sniff noses, and then sometimes, especially when meeting for the first time, they may exchange nips and may go as far as fighting with harsh bites and kicks to immediately establish the pecking order as their survival instincts tell them to.

Through body language. You can tell most things from their ears, but the rest of their body will show signs too.

When they are nervous, you can see it in their eyes, their head will be up, their tail may be up, they will take either short high steps and prance, or they will movce really fast with long strides. Their ears will be up and perked at what is making them nervous.

When they are calm, their ears will flop, maybe flicking casually around. They will take slow steps, or just stand. Their head will be pretty low, their tail won't be in the air, and you can tell in their eyes that they are calm.

When they are angry, they will swish their tail, pin their ears, maybe even offer to kick/bite.

Ussually, you will see them biting each other's backs. They are basically giving a massage. If a horse bites you, unless it is showing aggression, it is generally trying to show affection. 'You rub my back, I'll rub yours'.

Well the way they act will depend on if they know each other or not. If they do, then they will typically just sniff at each other and possibly start grooming their 'friend'. Strange horses will typically be cautious and approach each other slowly, sniffing, neighing, and may posture for the other horse. There may also be squealing and a little fighting.
