Remove the barrel/receiver from the stock, thouroughly clean the inside of the receiver with a spray solvent and a small brush making sure to remove all powder residue and old lubricant. Hot water is also useful to help remove what is left over, just hold the receiver under the faucet. Dry with compressed air or a hair blow dryer. Relubricate with 3 or 4 drops of very light oil, 3 in 1 machine oil or breakfree gun oil are my favorites. After removing the barrel/receiver from the stock, I use a pair of needle nosed pliers to remove the Recoil Spring and Guide. You can them remove the Charging Handle from the Breech Bolt. Now you can do a through cleaning of the various parts and also the barrel.

You do NOT lubricate it. You can clean it with a throttle plate cleaner that is made for that purpose.

Don't know if this will help, but I'm in the same boat as you. I just inherited one, with no instructions. I "googled" Marlin Rifles and their Model 60 looks to be pretty close in appearance - I notice the safety is in a different place. I was able to download that manual, and plan on trying it on my 987. You do not lubricate a clutch - You clean it. If you lubricate it will slip and it will collect dust and dirt from the belt and it will bung it up..
