Actually they would start using the litter box even before that. When the mother cat uses the litter box in front of the kitten, the kitten becomes curious and wants to try what its mother is doing. Kittens would usually climb into the litter box and smell around and then use it. No, actually you have to show the kitten where the litter box is. In some cases, if you see him or her pee, go up to her, say NO, and then pick her up and take her to the litter box and show him or her THIS is where to "go".

You should wait in till your cat is at least 12 weeks old before you start doing that because a kitten is not old enough for that the kitten should still be with its mom in till 12 weeks and the mom cleans it.

If the kitten has a mother the mama cat will do all the training. If it doesn't then after the kitten eats or wakes up take it to the litter and make it scratch with it's front feet for a few minutes. This will teach the kitten it's where you go

It's the same process as teaching a child. You take kitty to the litter box every hour or two. BUT kitties rely on SCENT. So when you find he went to the bathroom outside the litter box, pick it up with a tissue and drop it in the litter box. If urine, wet a corner of a paper towel in the urine and drop the corner into the litter box (and cover it). Use an old Popsicle stick to show kitty how to "scratch" the litter, or gently use kitty's paw to scoop litter to make a small hole. He'll probably hop right back out--that's okay! Next hour, repeat; he'll jump out again. You can also gently press down on kitty's hips into a squatting position, but don't force kitty. And remember, boy kitties do not squat as low as a girl kitty. Keep trying until, eventually, kitty gets the idea to go in the box.

By the way, Momma cats teach kitties to lap water, eat food, and dig in the litter box. This is one reason it is important for a Mom to stay with her litter until kittens are at least 6 to 8 weeks old.
