Gray whales move primarily by using their powerful flippers and tail flukes. Their long, streamlined bodies allow them to glide through the water efficiently. They typically swim at a slow pace of around 3-5 miles per hour but can reach speeds of up to 10 miles per hour in short bursts. When diving, gray whales can also perform a series of shallow dives while feeding on the ocean floor.
