Jack Russels normally do not need an excessive amount of grooming. I would recommend bathing them once a month unless another bath is needed. If they have a partucular skin condition, your vet may recommend more frequent or less bathing. A rubber brush can be used to help reduce the amount of shedding. You can brush as often as everyday or as little as once a week. Nail clipping is also very important. Clip your dogs nails every two weeks to once a month to keep his/her feet healthy.

How big does a female Jack Russell terriers get?

According to the Jack Russell Terrier Club of America breed standard, a true Jack Russell is between 10 and 15 inches high at the withers (top of the shoulder blades). However, there are a lot of JRTs or mix breeds that don't quite conform to this standard. Generally, you won't get one over 15 inches at the withers - that would be a Parson Russell, which is slightly different. Source: See related links

How are Jack Russells ranked in intelligence?

New answer. The Jack Russell's full bred name is the Jack Russell Terrier. In his book The Intelligence of Dogs, probably the best book on the subject, Stanley Coren describes intelligence tests he uses to find a dog's intelligence and he rates many breeds. His list of 79 breeds shows no terriers until #27 and most of the terriers start to show up on the list between #47 and #79. This means that generally speaking most terrier breeds are in the lower half of the list in intelligence. Jack Russell Terriers, which are noted for their intelligence, were not ranked because they were not recognized by the AKC until 2013. Coren did not include breeds recognized elsewhere but not in North America.

What is wrong if a Yorkie has been withdrawn lately and could it be because we have a Jack Russell Terrier and Rat Terrier mix who is very active and is this dog too aggressive for the Yorkie?

Although I think Jack Russell's are a nice dog I wouldn't want to own one because they bounce off the walls (although the odd ones I've seen can be more sedate) but Jack Russell breeds are noted for being hyper active and they never seem to tire out. Yorkies are more sedate and little lap dogs. They prefer peace and quiet and play time. The Jack Russell is commanding things around the house and it's time for some serious training with this dog. When you say to 'stop' or 'lay down' then they should adhere to your commands no matter what the breed. Dogs need to know YOU are the leader of the pack and not them! If you had the Yorkie first then they SHOULD COME FIRST! This is the nature order of things 'pecking order.' All treats and meals should be given to the first dog in your home and then your Jack Russell should come next. I have a 4 year old Bichon Fise and a 2 year old Cockapoo and I always use this method. I don't allow my Cockapoo to try to push or order my Bichon around. I also give equal love and never just to one. I'd say you have your hands full. LOL NEVER allow your Jack Russell to torment your Yorkie! Put your foot down immediately! If it's a trial in your family please seek one on one training with your Jack Russell. There are many trainers out there that just train Jack Russell's. Another good thing for a Jack Russell (and good for the whole family) is belonging to a Jack Russell Club where you are meeting other owners and the dogs have a blast racing around through trial runs and having a complete field day and hopefully tiring out! When you do this take your Yorkie with you and hold her/him in your arms. If she/he doesn't like going then leave her/him at home with a family member.
