The average life span of a raccoon is only 2-3 years in the wild. Females have one litter per year starting when they are a year old. If the raccoon lives just 2-3 years (many are killed in vehicular accidents) they would have about 2 litters as they have one litter per year. If they manage to escape an early death, they would continue to have a litter each year as long as they are of bearing age.
