Sputnik-2, carrying Laika the dog, was launched from Russia on November 3, 1957.
There were never any provisions made for recovering the spacecraft, and Laika was
doomed from the start.
Four days after launch, the cabin overheated, and the dog died.
Six days after launch, the batteries failed, and the whole spacecraft died.
It continued to be tracked from the ground, and its re-entry and destruction, along with
its long-dead passenger, were observed 162 days (0.44 year) after it was launched.
In the West, Sputnik 2 renewed the debate over the treatment of animals. In Russia,
the flight was widely ridiculed by ordinary citizens as Propaganda.
What a glorious and triumphant accomplishment !
Space junk can remain in Earth's orbit for many years, ranging from decades to hundreds of years, depending on its altitude and the density of the Earth's atmosphere at that level. Some larger pieces may even stay in orbit for thousands of years.
