All dogs should eat dry food as its good for their health, but with a puppy you shouldn't really be feeding them completely dry food at all, you should at least be putting watter in it so that it softens enough for them to be able to eat it. once they are old enough of have dry food, keep them on it but make sure its the right kind for that type of dog and for that size/age. If you feed them too much they'll get fat and if you feed them too little they'll become skinny. Plus make sure your walking them properly because that can also be a reason for fatness.
