Also, the muscles will relax over the top of her tail and over the back. The mare's tail will feel weak. There is obviously some guesswork involved on the part of the vet once it is determined that the mare is healthy and in foal any guess at foaling date is just that...a guess...

Usually, true. It depends on the mare. Some mares will "hold" their foals until they feel comfortable/secure enough to drop. Our mares have usually always foaled in the middle of the night. As her labour progresses she may lie down, get up, move, and do this several times. By the time she starts straining in earnest, the foal should be born within an hour. If it has not arrived, you should call the vet.
