Lynx generally inhabits wilderness areas that are forested with dense undercover of thickets. It favours old growth boreal forests. They prefer that area because snowshoe hare population increase in forests that are growing back after fires or logging. The range of the lynx includes parts of North America covered by boreal forest that is occupied by snowshoe hares, their main food source. The lynx seldom uses an underground den. Young are born in thickets or uprooted or hollow logs.
