The US Navy has done extensive work with dolphins. One of the things they were trained to do was to spot underwater mines and mark them for removal. They are also very well suited to patrol around ships and harbors for unauthorized divers. There have been more and, to my thinking, far grimmer programs aimed at using the porpoise as an instrument of war. Bear in mind that, even today, the SONAR our submarines and ASW platforms use is not nearly as effective it shape discernment as what porpoises are able to do. Perhaps, then, the top of the list of "biological" projects was ASW detection and interdiction. At the time of this writing, however, (August, 2008) the US Navy states that all programs involving the use of porpoises have been terminated. I highly doubt that there will be any activity of dolphins patrolling a ship or a harbor. It's just insane because that's what we train GUARDS for, not dolphins. The navy pays no attention to dolphins at this time since they are to busy with the war in Iraq.
