Alpacas are generally shy but very curious beasts. Most prefer to not be touched by humans, but they want to be near you to see what's going on.

They have very strong herding instincts and do not thrive without other alpacas to live with.

Sounds alpacas make include a low hum, their all-purpose communication; clicking their tongue, often shared between a mother and baby; a loud squeal, to alert the herd to potential danger; and a gurgling sound called an orgle, made by the males during mating.

They are very stoic and try to hide any illness or weakness.

Alpacas often spit at each other to show dominance regarding food, to fend off unwanted mating, among other reasons. They normally only spit at humans when they feel they are in danger.
