Mammals are warmblooded animals for which the female produces milk to feed the babies while they are very young. The land-dwelling mammals have hair covering their bodies, although the human has only a little.

With one exception, mammals have babies that are born live. The exception is the duck-billed platypus in Australia, in which the female which lays eggs.

Mammals vary enormously in size, from the tiny shrew to the elephant. Even larger is the whale, which is one of the few aquatic mammals, as are the dolphin, the porpoise, the seal and the walrus.
