There are hundreds of different species of bat in fact there are almost one thousand known varieties. These flying mammals range from huge fruit bats in South East Asia to bats that are no larger than a bumblebee. But some of the cutest or oddest depending on how you look at it are furry tailed bats. Furry tailed bats are mostly indigenous to North America. They are hearty and strong animals with long wings and they tend to be great flyers. One of the most astounding facts about the furry tailed bats is that they fly in daylight. There are several species of furry tailed bats, such as the hoary bat and the red bat that actually fly during the day but usually only when migrating south for the winter. Another odd fact about furry tail bats is that the genus is the only bat apart from the parti-colored bat that has an extra pair of nipples. Since they have four nipples this allows them to have more than one offspring per season, with two or three not being uncommon and at times even four. Furry tailed bats usually do not dwell in caves when roosting. This group tends to hang from twigs, usually hidden by leaves in trees. The northern species such as the red and hoary bats have particularly thick and dense fur for extra insulation and may migrate south in winter, although winter roosting sites can still be quite cool.
