First and foremost, you need a clear head. Many people, disoriented by the unfamiliar bush surroundings, have made foolish decisions that led to their deaths. Remember that the Australian bush, although full of bush fauna, is characterised by a pervasive "silence", broken mostly by the piercing sound of cicadas. To the uninitiated, it is not a friendly place.

  • You need to find a cool place to stay during the day, and a warm place to shelter at night
  • Don't try eating any unfamiliar fruits of plants: many are toxic to humans
  • If you are not near a creek or other water supply, find a means to collect condensation overnight
  • Leave a clear trail to show your presence, especially if you try to move on and seek help
  • Watch for signs of civilization - the presence of stock animals, for example
  • Mobile phones are useless in many areas of the bush - you are likely to not get a signal
