Brushwood dog
Shiba means brushwood (a reddish brown wood). In some dialects it also means small. If you are referring to Shiba Inu (the dog breed) it is usually translated as little brushwood dog (because of their coloring). In Japanese Shiba Inu are usually called Shiba Ken (Shiba breed) to avoid redundancy (inu already means dog).
Shiba means brushwood and Inu means dog so, it means Brushwood Dog.

Inu is the literal word for dog in Japanese so calling a dog Shiba Inu in Japan is redundant. The dog is referred to as Shiba Ken (ken being the word for breed) or simply Shiba. Due to a recent popular Softbank (mobile phone company) ad campaign, white/cream colored Shibas are often referred to as Otou-san, the dog's name in the commercials.
