There are actually many reasons that this could occur. Check if there are any other symptoms such as redness, irritation, or drainage in the eye. The dilation could be related to an eye injury or irritation and may improve on it's own. Also, check to see if the eye constricts when you shine a light into his/her eye. If not, you would probably be best off seeing your vet.

Generally speaking, one eye should NOT stay dilated! I would get to the doctor because it could very well be an indication of an illness, i.e., brain tumor.
