Firstly, an animal reacts to the weather, which tells it whether winter is coming or not and whether or not it should prepare for hibernation. If the signs foretell winter is on its way, the animal, lets say a toad, goes to find somewhere which is warm, sheltered and possibly hidden (away from predators). When it finds it, for eg. a log/stone pile or a compost heap, it settles down, and it falls into a very deep sleep- its heart rate plummets to the bare minimum to keep it alive, its brain activitiy slows down incredibly, and its breathing is very slow, shallow and light- barely alive. Through that time through winter, it stays in this state until it senses the weather wariming up, indicating spring has arrived, in whicch the toad will go offin search of a pond to mate. There are some very strange cases in animals that hibernate, one of which very much interested me. It is of a caterpillar, that is in hibernation for most of the year, and it lives in the Arctic Tundra. When it senses the very short spring is coming to an end, in which it had guzzled as much vegetation as it possibly could, it would go find a place that's sheltered, for example under a stone or similar, and it wouyld sitthere, and began hibernating- details decribed above. Then the interesting thing happens. The temperatures get to absolutely freezing levels, down to -65 or more degrees! So the caterpillar, all snug, practically dies under that rock or wherever- it actually freezes solid! On a documentary by David Attenborough, time lapse Photography showed this amazing phenomena occuring- it was amazing! Forgot what the brilliant caterpillar was called though.
