There are three perfectly reasonable answers to this question.

  1. A Gorilla (Genus Gorilla) - Gorillas are exclusive to Africa, and are the largest of all primates
  2. A Chimpanzee (Genus Pan) - Chimpanzees are also primates exclusive to Africa, and the common Chimpanzee (Pan troglodytes) can weigh in at 140 pounds and reach 5'3" in height, which is fairly big.
  3. Humans (Homo sapiens) are primates, inhabit Africa, and (as far as the fossil record has been able to determine) originate in Africa. Although humans aren't as massive as gorillas, they still qualify as being pretty darn big primates.

Of course, if you just wanted to know the largest African primate, that would be the Eastern Lowland Gorilla (Gorilla beringei graueri), which has been recorded at 860 pounds.
