Their diet is almost entirely seals that surface through or cross the ice. They will occasionally attempt to kill vulnerable walruses, or small beluga whales that swim near the surface.

A polar bears principle prey are seals, which it hunts out on the frozen ice pack during winter. During summer, when the icepack has melted, the polar bear lives mainly off accumulated body fat stored during the winter. It may scavenge on washed up carcases of seal and whales during the lean summer months. If the freezing of the sea is delayed too long at the approach of winter, polar bears have been known to have starved to death. Hunger may force the polar bears to enter the human townships in search of food from bins, causing conflict.
Seals are the preferred diet/prey for Polar Bears. Most of its diet consists of ringed or bearded seals. They are also known to hunt and kill adult Walruses and even Beluga Whales. Mature/Adult bears tend to eat only the calorie rich skin and blubber of the seal, whereas youngsters consume the meat as well. They have been known to even raid bird nests and feed on chicks and eggs.
