In India, there a four varnas, or social groups. In order from highest to lowest, they are Brahmins (priests), Kshatriyas (warriors), Vaisyas (common people and skilled workers), and Sudras (unskilled laborers and servants). Then there is one group to low to be considered a varna. These are Pariahs, also referred to as Untouchables, Dalit (meaning oppressed in Punjab), or Slumdogs. They used to skin animals and handle dead bodies. They are not allowed to associate themselves with higher varnas. They were 'too dirty'. Today they are people in India who are very poor, and also discriminated against.
