A borzoi (AKA: Russian Wolfhound) is a long coated breed from Russia. They were the favorite breed of the Tsars and were used in royal wolf hunts where they would have a borzoi (or a pack of borzoi - usuall three - 1 female and 2 males) chase down a wolf and hold it there until the hunters arrive.

They are a large breed, averaging 28 inches - 33 inches at the shoulder and weight around 60 - 90 pounds. Despite its size, it is an extremely agile hunter and some can reach speeds up to 30 miles and hour.

They can come in a multitude of colors and color combinations - but, merles are not seen in this breed. If they do appear, it is extremely rare.

Borzoi have a long, narrow head with obliquely set eyes that are usually dark in color.

Today, borzoi make great companions for many people. They are gentle, loving, and well mannered. They aren't big barkers, but some still maintain their hunting instincts, so, be careful with them around small animals such as rabbits, cats, and even small dogs such as Chihuahuas.
